Oct 23 2010 Equicast Clinic was Fun & Educational for all
A group of PHCP members and 5 other barefoot aficionados joined together to learn from Marcia Sadler & Sally Hugg about how casting can provide an effective tool in rehabilitating hooves. Marcia & Sally shared tips on when casts can be useful (including before/after photos); how they are effective and ‘tips of the trade’ for effectively applying casts for longevity. Some of the participants already had experience using casts, so they were also sharing stories of success. Each participant was able to practice putting on a cast under Marcia’s watchful eye. Some folks, like Marcia Nelson, who are skilled at wrapping limbs found that applying casts was intuitive. Others, who don’t wrap legs found that they were a little awkward with wrapping the cast on quickly, even on a plastic (not moving around or grabbing its hoof away!) proved challenging!
At the end of the day, everyone agreed that is was time well spent. A couple of horses with thin walls or thin soles felt better moving around. We may have even helped an owner decide to keep her mare barefoot for a while longer!
The Casting clinic was very worthwhile.
THANK YOU to Marcia & Sally for generously sharing their knowledge and time with us along with many thanks to Equicast for donating the supplies.
